Diet tips - social eating at work
From time to time, people like to socialize at work. That's great, but there are situations you must plan for.
• Become a birthday cake taster. This is one of the key high-risk situations. For example, say someone is having a birthday. There's a big party. "Come on, have a piece of cake. Just this once." That's 500 calories of fat and sugar you don't need. Go to the party, but tell everyone that you are on a special program of tasting birthday cakes only. Then have one forkful, and that's it. You don't feel deprived and you don't insult anyone, but you don't accept your own 500-calorie serving on a plate. If you do, you know you will finish it. The same thing goes for birthday breakfasts, which often come complete with doughnuts, cookies, and other high-calorie foods. Have a corner of someone's special homemade brownie, but no more.
• Plan for the holiday party season. The run of December holiday parties is one long high-risk situation. Here you will usually find nuts, cheese, and wine, as well as cakes, to tempt you. I have developed a great strategy for this situation. First of all, get some sparkling water with a lime wedge in it. That will look like a drink. Find someone to talk to far away from the table of goodies. Circulate at this outside perimeter by either allowing one person to monopolize the conversation for the whole time or by working your way among the most talkative people you can find. In no time, the party will be over and you will have survived another high-risk situation.
• Stay away from candy. Two other hazards in the workplace are worth mentioning. One is the vending machine full of candy bars near the coffee machine. Standing and talking near vending machines can be dangerous if you indulge in a 400-calorie chocolate caramel nougat candy bar. Stay away from both the machine and the second hazard¡ªthe candy jar. In an effort to create a friendly environment, many workers put candy jars on their desks and fill them with sweets. Stay far away from these jars, since they can be land mines in your war against fat.
